 OUTREACH RESOURCES AVAILABLE FROM INFORMATION STAFF

1. Flyer for ARS' Sci4Kids Web Site - This web site in English is geared to kids 8-13 years of age with a teacher component with classroom activities. Although the first screen of this web site remains the same, the stories behind the initial screen do change.  The web site has lots of sound effects, animation, and color to try to keep the children's attention.  Just double click wherever a hand appears on the first screen, and see what appears on the next screens! 2. CD Rom of ARS' Sci4Kids web site - The Information Staff will "print" a CD of the Sci4Kidswebsite for you to use at a booth that doesn't have Internet hookup. 3. Whiz Kid Activity Packet, *slightly revised October 2000*, of assorted ag research-oriented activities and quizzes designed for science teachers of students in middle school and high school.  *Another idea: The quizzes can be copied and used at applicable Fair Exhibit Booths. For example, the Science in Your Shopping Cart Quiz and the Barnyard Fun Quiz have both been used at applicable Fairs to entice kids to the Exhibit Booth!* Everything is reproducible!  It is downloadable from the ARS Web Site and make copies (Updated 7/15/05).

5. News You Can Use flyer of a number of helpful ARS web sites. In particular, a number of teachers have found the photo web site, available at "Image Gallery" at the ARS Web Site, very helpful for use on bulletin boards and in classroom activities. 6. 7. Past issues of Agricultural Research magazine. The latest issue or past issues with "local" articles and/or covers may be requested. 9. Four Table-Top Exhibits have been developed by the Information Staff with the intent of lending them out. Each set-up Exhibit is about 39" high, 77" across, and divided into three panels. In the mailable, wheelable case, the Exhibits weigh about 50 pounds. The titles of each of the Exhibits follow. 11. ARS Newslink is the weekly e-mail pointer for web links to stories issued each workday by ARS. It is issued once a week on Fridays and provides a two- or three-line description of each story with the web link to the entire story. At the bottom of each ARS Newslink are instructions on how to un-subscribe. Science Projects for Kids - When you get those calls looking for help, just refer them to Science4Kids Web Site and click on the yellow More button in the lower right corner to reach the science projects section; or go directly. The idea behind the site is to help students realize agriculture is high-tech and grounded in scientific research. One of the most popular of the project ideas so far has been one questioning how much iron can be found in various breakfast cereals. The topic comes under the category "Medicine and Health (Nutrition)."   (Added 11/29/00)
